CLIMATE RESILIENT BORDERLANDS
HORN OF AFRICA (CRBi)

is a registered civil society organization in Ethiopia under the Civil Society Organization Proclamation No. 1113/2019. Our focus is on implementing innovative solutions and structural changes that bolster resilience against climate change's adverse effects on vulnerable populations in the Horn of Africa. We work extensively in peripheral borderland areas, where climate change impacts and related challenges are most acute.

Our projects are evidence-based and designed in collaboration with universities through internship programs. We engage local taskforces, including youth, leaders, and women, to ensure the projects' local ownership and sustainability. We offer research, consultancy, and capacity-building services to restore social structures impacted by climate change.

Our mission

At Climate Resilient Borderlands Horn of Africa, our mission is rooted in driving transformative solutions and structural advancements aimed at cultivating resilience in the face of climate change. Our focal point is to address the adverse repercussions of climate change on susceptible communities within Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa region. We are dedicated to delivering comprehensive research, consultancy, and capacity-building services that aim to restore compromised social foundations and essential requisites that have been impacted by climate-related challenges.

Our ambit encompasses a wide spectrum of concerns stemming from climate change, such as migration, displacement, economic development, job creation, healthcare, education, conflicts, livelihoods, and agriculture. Our overarching goal revolves around offering aid to vulnerable population segments grappling with the deleterious aftermath of climate change and formulating effective strategies to surmount the intricacies presented by this global challenge.

Additionally, our commitment extends to elevating the standard of education, research, and training pertaining to climate change across higher education institutions and universities. We proffer specialized training in business incubation, technical and vocational domains, alongside facilitating international scholarship opportunities for proficient candidates hailing from vulnerable communities.

Associates and Focal Points in Borderland Areas

Tadele Hatte Minne
(Omorate, Dasenech District, South Omo Zone)

Tadele has a Master’s Degree in Social Anthropology from Arba Minch University. He is the first Bachelor Graduate of the Dasenech pastoralist community. Currently, Tadele is the Head of the Dasenech District Education Office. Tadele has a vast experience of conducting qualitative and quantitative research on topics including Climate change, migration and conflict in Dasenech. He also worked as field officer for Save the Children, SWS and other organizations.

Njoki Maina Olive
(Nairobi, Kenya)

Njoki is our associate for projects involving Kenya. She works at the Kenyan Institute of Migration Studies under the Directorate of Immigration Studies, Ministry of Interior and National Administration. Her research areas include humanitarian migration, human security, migration management, community psychology and community interventions, policy formulation policy cycle & policy review.

Abdirahman Ahmed
(Jigjiga, Somali Region, Ethiopia)

Abdirahman Ahmed is an assistant Prof. of Sociology at Jigjiga University and a Ph.D. researcher at Ruhr University of Bochum. His research interests lie in the area of migration, social protection, durable solutions, climate change, livelihoods and mobility in Ethiopia and in the Somali region. He taught courses related to forced migration, Internal displacement and research methodology courses. Abdirahman worked with the government, INGOs, UN and other local CSOs both on a regular and on a consultant basis.

Meet Niklas Mayer
CRBi Director

Niklas is a researcher, developmentalist and consultant for Migration, Climate Change and Development topics based in Ethiopia. His academic background and PhD research revolves around the influence of climate adaptation and resilience building projects on mobility patters in Ethiopia. Niklas has a proven expertise in climate change resilience-building, rural development, child migration, pastoralist mobility and climate governance in the IGAD region. His past employers and collaborators include GIZ, IOM, ECDPM, ICMPD, IGAD, Mixed Migration Center, the European Commission, the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), FES and KAS, among others.

Meet Meba Teklewold
Finance and Operations Director

Meba Teklewold is a highly skilled Ethiopian national with a wealth of experience in managerial, business, economic, and humanitarian roles. With a background in Law and Economics. Meba is also a licensed Attorney and legal consultant at Ethiopian Federal Courts. Meba has over nine years of experience working in the humanitarian sector in different parts of East Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia.

Solomon Tsadiku
Associate Legal Officer

Solomon Tsadiku is an accomplished legal professional with over 7 years of experience in the field. With a background as a public prosecutor in the Ministry of Justice, Solomon has developed skills in criminal justice investigation and court litigation. He holds an LLB and LLM in general law and specialization in human rights law from Addis Ababa University, respectively. Solomon is a licensed federal lawyer with knowledge in national, regional, and international human rights protection systems. He possesses diverse experience in the Ethiopian legal system and has undergone extensive service training. Solomon is committed to providing high-quality legal services to clients and ensuring justice is served.

Hiwot Tesfamichael Beza
Auditor

Hiwot Tesfamichael Beza is an experienced Auditor based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She specializes in ensuring compliance with internal and external control procedures by examining records, reports, operating practices, regulations, and documentation. Hiwot is skilled in communicating risks and issues to all levels of management to implement improvements and establish accountability, transparency, and a culture of continuous improvement in operations. Her areas of expertise include audit planning, compliance tests with accounting and audit standards, local tax requirements, and organization policy. Hiwot is also proficient in financial audits to ensure that financial statements are presented in a true and fair view, making substantive tests and tests of control for all accounts including systems, reviewing ledger balances and analysis to search for fraud or error, fraud investigations, checking account records for their completeness and existence, assessing unusual activities and transactions, assisting clients in their process of conversion to IFRS, preparing financial and donor reports, preparing management reports on the weakness of the internal control system and giving recommendations, and training junior staff.

Mrs. Kuri Ayele
Gender Empowerment Expert

Kuri is a seasoned expert in gender and cross-cutting issues within the realms of humanitarian crisis and public health. With a professional foundation in Public Health (MPH), Sociology, Social Work, and Clinical Nursing, Kuri's expertise weaves together a multidisciplinary background. Kuri's possesses an intricate understanding of policies, procedures, and regulations especially in the context of Gender, Health, and Nutrition. With a remarkable career spanning over a decade, Kuri' worked with various international NGOs. She has seamlessly transitioned between roles, including serving as a Project Assistant at AMREF Health Africa. Her leadership as a Health and Nutrition Officer and CMAM Supervisor at International Medical Corps (IMC) has been instrumental in driving positive change. Kuri's tenure as a Community Therapeutic Care (CTC) Nurse at GOAL Ethiopia demonstrates her unwavering dedication to transformation, even in the face of adversity. She holds certifications in Gender empowerment, Communication for Development, Social Analysis Action (SAA) equips her to dissect complex gender related issues and provide tangible solutions. She is also certified in SQUEAC - Survey for Nutrition to the intricate Management of Safe Abortion through Vacuum Aspiration.
